Hispanic Heritage Month: Highlighting Support Available for Warriors of All Backgrounds

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) is highlighting – in English and Español –the different ways the organization connects, serves, and empowers post-9/11 wounded veterans of all backgrounds, at no cost to them and their families.

Hispanics are the largest ethnic minority in the country, and they serve the United States armed forces in great numbers and with pride. There are more than 1.6 million Hispanic veterans living in the U.S. and its territories, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In fact, VA projects that by 2050, the Hispanic veteran population will increase by 16% compared to 2023.

WWP’s latest Annual Warrior Survey shows that about 20% of the warriors WWP serves are Hispanic. Those warriors are from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, among other countries. Although varying in ethnic backgrounds, they all have one thing in common: they proudly served the U.S. armed forces and have earned the right to care and benefits as veterans. That is why WWP offers programs and services for post-9/11 wounded, ill, and injured veterans of all backgrounds and supports them through customized paths to healing.

WWP serves warriors of all backgrounds through free programs and services. Learn more here.

Veteran Connection

WWP provides veterans and their family support members with opportunities to connect with others who will listen and help – a community that champions their success. It starts with becoming a WWP-registered warrior or registering as a family support member or caregiver. Then, the healing begins. With over 80 peer support groups and counting, WWP can connect warriors to other veterans who know what they are experiencing.

Mental Wellness

Through interactive programs, rehabilitative retreats, and professional services, veterans coping with the invisible wounds of war can build resilience to help overcome mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), military sexual trauma (MST), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and more. WWP offers various mental health programs and services for veterans, including Warrior Care Network®, Project Odyssey®, and WWP Talk.

Physical Wellness

Move better. Eat better. Feel better. Sleep better. That’s what is possible with WWP. Through coaching, nutritional education, shared physical activities, adaptive sports, goal setting, and skill building, warriors are empowered to make long-term changes toward a healthier life. When warriors commit to making positive changes to improve their physical health, WWP is ready to assist.

Career and VA Benefits Counseling

Transitioning to civilian life is difficult. That is why WWP is here to help veterans and their families every step of the way. Whether it’s understanding the VA benefits process or pinpointing a new career path, WWP is here to serve those who served us.

Independence Program

This program provides long-term support to catastrophically wounded veterans living with injuries that impact independence, such as a moderate to severe brain injury, spinal cord injury, or neurological condition. Also, the program serves warriors who manage illnesses and medical conditions such as stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. It is specifically designed to support warriors who, without high-touch services, would struggle to live independently day to day due to the severity of their injuries. The Independence Program aims to empower all warriors, family members, and caregivers, no matter their status.
