Warriors Find Their Strength on White Water Rafting Adventure

CANON CITY, Colo., Sept. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Warriors and their guests experienced the thrills of white water rafting while learning to work together during a Wounded Warrior Project^® (WWP) gathering.

"I enjoy the outdoors and love the opportunity to be in the water," said Army veteran Chris Batiste. "This event was amazing. The other warriors were really outgoing." 

"This was my first event, and I was looking for friendships and connections with other veterans while having an adventure," said Army veteran Channelle Glanville. "I wasn't disappointed. It was nice to be surrounded by friendly veterans who weren't afraid to admit they need help opening up."

Warriors enjoyed both rough and tranquil stretches of the Royal Gorge on the scenic Arkansas River.

"I figured I would get a little rafting experience in," said Army veteran Dustin Speakman. "I enjoyed meeting other veterans and getting to do something that I've never done before."

The 2017 WWP Annual Warrior Survey (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/survey) highlights the importance of connection at WWP outreach events. These settings support the long-term recovery of warriors by reminding them they are not alone and that there are people who care about them and can help.

"This was a huge opportunity to bond with veterans from this area," Chris said. "It's great to connect with others dealing with the same issues and problems I am."

"Wounded Warrior Project means the world to me," Dustin said. "They were there for me in the beginning when no one else was. They're the ones that introduced me to outdoor recreation and adaptive sports, which I credit with my recovery."

"I'm really new to Wounded Warrior Project," Channelle said, "but, so far, I've met friendly staff and veterans who are only trying to help each other. I feel like they're a team I can come to for help or guidance."
