Wounded Warrior Project Helps Students Get Ready for School

KILLEEN, Texas, Aug. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With a new school year on the horizon, so too is the need for pencils, paper, and other educational supplies. Students and parents filled the civic and conference center in Killeen last week, waiting for their chance to gear up for the new school year.

"I organized this event to help students in Central Texas whose families may not be able to buy everything they need to return to the classroom," said organizer Jamaica Mitchell, who teamed up with Wounded Warrior Project^® (WWP) to help students for this occasion. WWP purchased backpacks and supplies to provide for more than 120 students of wounded veterans.

The retired Army medic started similar school supply events while still on active duty. Jamaica's return to civilian life didn't slow her community service, and she now works throughout the year on her own time to give back in numerous ways.

"I want to help bridge that gap from uniform to civilian attire; too many of our women service members do not have the right clothing for job interviews," Jamaica said. She knows the value of assistance in the transition to civilian life.

"I know how important this help can be. Wounded Warrior Project helped me through classes and peer groups, and when I went through chemotherapy, they were there for me every step of the way," she said.

WWP programs support both immediate and long-term recovery and are personalized to enable warriors, caregivers, and family members to reach educational and employment goals, and recover physically, mentally, and emotionally.

National Guard veteran Dan Morgan enjoyed the opportunity to help during the drive.

"Events like these bring wounded warriors together to get ideas and help each other," Dan said. His children also got backpacks from the event, helping them head back to the classroom. "Wounded Warrior Project helps warriors help other warriors."
