Wounded Warrior Project Supporter Profile: 5-Year-Old Carson Scherder

“I was watching YouTube videos about soldiers, and I saw a video about Wounded Warrior Project,” Carson said.

BOWLING GREEN, Mo. (March 28, 2017) – Generous donors from all walks of life and of all ages allow Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) to provide free, life-changing programs and services to injured veterans, their caregivers, and family members. Recently, five-year-old Carson Scherder donated some of his money to WWP to support its mission to honor and empower Wounded Warriors.

“I was watching YouTube videos about soldiers, and I saw a video about Wounded Warrior Project,” Carson said. “For my birthday, my mom said I had enough toys and should do something nice for others. I decided to use my present to help our soldiers.”

There’s a military tradition that runs in the Scherder family, and Brian, Carson’s father, explained how Carson’s older relatives have served.

“His great aunt was in the Air Force, and his great uncle was in the Navy,” he said. “He also had two great grandfathers who served in the Korean War.”

It’s a tradition that Carson hopes to continue when he gets older.

“When I get older, I want to become a soldier,” Carson said. “They fight to keep us safe, and I want to do that too.”

WWP’s programs and services assist injured veterans with mental health, physical health and wellness, career and benefits counseling, connecting with other warriors and their communities, and long-term care for the most seriously wounded.
