Offering Unwavering Support During Veterans’ Journeys

Becky Ross is a longtime supporter of veterans through her volunteer work with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP). When the veterans charity announced it was bringing its Carry Forward® 5K, delivered by CSX®, to Nashville in 2018, Becky sprang into action by recruiting other volunteers, picking up gift-in-kind donations, and serving as assistant volunteer manager on event day.

Becky proudly carried forward for her two Marine sons, Christopher and Michael. She even brought a sign that read “God Bless the USA” to the top of the bridge over the Cumberland River and enthusiastically cheered for Carry Forward participants.

“There were so many wounded warriors participating, and to see them continue to struggle physically, mentally, and emotionally with people around them going ‘We’ve got this’ — the camaraderie out on the course was fabulous,” Becky said.

Becky became a WWP supporter in 2006, when Michael enrolled at the Naval Academy and she joined a networking group of military parents.

“I got a call from a guy asking to borrow some American flags to decorate for a Soldier Ride coming to town,” Becky recalled.

She helped feed the warriors and cheered them on along the bike ride route. Soldier Ride® offers adaptive, rehabilitative cycling to wounded veterans across the U.S. The program fosters physical activity, camaraderie, and emotional healing as injured veterans and civilian supporters build bonds and lasting memories. Becky has coordinated community support in Nashville for Soldier Ride ever since.

She continues to volunteer in the community, eagerly assisting with anything that is needed and speaking up for veterans.

“Over 15 years, I’ve met some amazing wounded warriors who have sacrificed so much for our country,” Becky said. “Witnessing their courage in facing their injuries and working through their healing journeys keeps me motivated.”

Veterans have a brave advocate in Becky as she inspires Carry Forward volunteers and participants. She’s walking her own virtual 5K in Nashville this year — with the same unwavering support.
