Adaptive Sports Director
Mike Owens serves as the Adaptive Sports director for Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP). In his role, he helps veterans with severe injuries or impairments improve their well-being by empowering them to participate in specially modified athletic activities and sports.
Prior to joining WWP, Mike served in the Marine Corps and deployed to Iraq twice. During his second deployment in 2005, he was severely injured when his convoy hit a portion of road that had been blown away by a previous IED. His driver lost control of the vehicle, which ultimately rolled over Mike twice, starting a two-year journey of recovery, with more than 35 surgeries, including an amputation of his right arm. Mike started participating in adaptive sports, including seated volleyball, wheelchair basketball, track, and sled hockey. In 2010, he became certified in adaptive scuba and found his passion. He has completed dives all over the world, including in Egypt’s Red Sea and in Roatan, Honduras.
Mike connected with WWP early in his recovery and participated in Soldier Ride® events in Israel, Germany, and the United Kingdom. He joined WWP as a teammate in 2007 and served as a manager of the Soldier Ride program before assuming his current position in 2024.
Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in business science from the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.
