Wounded Warrior Project Hosts Back-to-School Open House

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Children of injured veterans were set up for a successful school year during a recent Wounded Warrior Project^® (WWP) back-to-school open house. Warriors and family members gathered at the WWP Cambridge office, where they received information about the back-to-school process, along with a bounty of supplies.

From binders to crayons to writing utensils, families found everything needed for their school-aged children. And because no one wants to carry so much loot by hand, a selection of WWP backpacks was also available.

"The backpacks, pens, highlighters, and notebooks were a big hit," said Navy veteran Scott Wells, whose daughters are beginning their sophomore year of high school and freshman year of college. "Not to mention, they now have more WWP-branded clothing and gear than I do!"

"I have four daughters who needed things for school," said Jason Beasley, Army veteran. "They're definitely excited for the new year, and we're all thrilled about the back-to-school supplies they got from WWP."

Participants mingled with fellow wounded veterans and family members as they browsed through the selection of school supplies. The potential to form new friendships with peers supports the long-term recovery needs of warriors by reintroducing them to the bonds experienced during military service. The interaction can be beneficial to the families, too.

"Outings like this are important because they let my kids know they aren't the only ones who deal with certain things," Jason said. "It also gives them a feeling of pride for me for serving our country. They know that we are appreciated for our sacrifices."

"By meeting and interacting with other wounded warriors and families, we are able to bond with those who have similar concerns, interests, and challenges," Scott said. "You can meet people who have successfully dealt with issues you are currently struggling with, or maybe you can help another person who's going through a rough time."

WWP staff closely interacted with injured veterans as the backpacks were given out and advised them of additional services to assist in their recovery process. Because generous donors fuel the progression of WWP resources, veterans enjoy the benefits of the programs with no charge to them.
